An Atrium is the central room of an Ancient Roman house. Visual Atrium is the central collection of Eddie Smith's artwork spanning his life and his career as a concept artist in the interactive entertainment industry.
The book begins with a foreword by Marcus Lehto. (Art/Creative Director at Bungie from 1996 - 2012) and also chronicles Eddie's life story as an artist in Three Acts:
- Act I: The Young Artist
- Eddie talks about his childhood, what made him want to become a concept artist, major challenges he had as a kid growing up not sure if he would ever be able to live his dream as a concept artist.
- He also shares very personal, touching accounts of what almost made him give up art altogether... and how he overcame it.
- Act II: The Art Student/Intern
- Eddie talks about his College years where he also played Basketball while majoring in Fine Art, and how balancing those two worlds affected him artistically and personally.
- Beginning his career in the game industry while still in college, Eddie shares some of his early work and his experiences as an intern, offering insight and guidance to students trying to pursue a career in production art.
- Act III The Industry Professional
- During this Act, Eddie gives open and honest commentary of his experiences in the industry, "The good, the bad, and the uncomfortable."
- Eddie takes us through his career from his first job at FASA Corp, to Microsoft where he worked for Bungie on Halo, and Halo 2. He also talks about what he loved about working there, and eventually what prompted him to leave Bungie Microsoft.
- You will also see many works he's produced for other game companies throughout his career.
With over 20 years as a concept/visual development artist, Eddie has also worked on notable projects and franchises like F.E.A.R. 3, Mech Warrior 4: Vengeance, and RYSE: Son of Rome.
